Hunh, some marketing genius seems to be at work. Several articles (linked) are describing a 'smartlet' as a newfangled gizmo that will magically make it easier to charge an EV. But, gosh, the pictures just look like an outdoor power outlet.
Here's an example of what these articles are saying:
Plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs) are coming, slowly but surely. But how will we recharge them? Many people will be able to plug them at night in their driveway or garage, but others such as apartment dwellers and people who need the extra range during the day will need some new infrastructure.
Geesh, it seems like they've been reading too many "xyzzy For Dummies" books and begun believing they're a dummie. Um, gosh, electricity is already everywhere so what in the way of 'new infrastructure' is required? Especially as there is already a well understood way to install outdoor-safe power outlets.
The articles mention Coulomb Technologies, http://www.lowenthal.com/coulombtech/, which is operating in some kind of stealth mode.
Well, okay, whatever they call it if there is an increase in the number of power outlets for EV use that will be a good thing.
